Serenity Tickets Arrived

Posted on August 3, 2005August 3, 2005 by Chris McQuillan

After a fortnight away in the faraway land of France, I returned home at about 3AM. Leaping into the pile of post by the door, I rummaged through until I found what I was looking for. Two tickets for the World Premiere of Joss Whedon’s “Serenity”.

When the Edinburgh International Film Festival launched its ticket sales several weeks ago, they clearly had no idea that “Serenity” was to become one of the most successful films the Festival had ever seen. 44,000 people flooded in to purchase tickets to the event, in the end resulting in nothing more than a complete crash of the web server, and jammed phone lines. The EIFF simply couldn’t cope with the demand. As some people grumbled and gave up, others swore at each other, but others (myself included) continued to attempt to make bookings despite being bombarded by error messages. After boxing around these for several hours, I managed (even after it had “Sold Out”) to get two tickets into my basket. I suspect this was because during the confusion, overbookings had occurred, and tickets were being released.

Anyway, with the golden jewels now in my basket, I hurried to the checkout, only to get slapped quite violently in the face by the site’s mathematical incompetence.

A holiday for the reviewer (myself) in France has just delayed them slightly!

REVIEW: Stargate Atlantis – Season Two, Episode One

Posted on July 17, 2005July 17, 2005 by Chris McQuillan

Very nice.

Picking up from a good cliffhanger last season, like Battlestar Galactica, Atlantis doesn’t seem to have lost the pace. The drama grabs you from the start, and doesn’t let go. It’s an hour of television that passes very quickly, for all the right reasons.

REVIEW: Battlestar Galactica – Season Two, Episode One

Posted on July 16, 2005July 17, 2005 by Chris McQuillan

Fracking awesome, as Starbuck would say.

This is how you open a second season, not losing one bit of the pace from the first episode. It’s tightly written, and carries over the outstanding production values of the first season.

REVIEW: Stargate SG-1 – Season 9, Episode One

Posted on July 16, 2005July 17, 2005 by Chris McQuillan

Well. This is different.

“Avalon” is interesting, let’s put it that way. There’s a lot that works, and a lot that doesn’t. It doesn’t give me the return in energy and excitement I was expecting, and feels more like another slap to the SG-1 franchise. But it gives me hope….

Review : Star Trek Enterprise Season One DVD

Posted on July 13, 2005July 17, 2005 by Chris McQuillan

The same year Star Trek Voyager turned off the lights, and packed up the sets, a new show was being created. Rick Berman and Brannon Braga quickly knocked together the idea of having the new Trek series be a prequel – a controversial decision to say the least.

The first season opened to some spectacular ratings in the US, dipping dramatically and suddenly. This continued until this year, when the show was eventually cancelled for its lacklustre performance in the Nielsen ratings. That’s not to say the ratings fell due to show quality – UPN never did any decent advertising after the premiere. The result is a high budget Trek series that tends to twist and turn with exactly what it wants to be. Season One has a clear theme, however – exploration. Season One is the year that shows what the show would probably have been like, had the ratings not fallen. The wonder and excitement is there, there isn’t much danger – it’s all about “seeking new life, and new civilisations.”

Not strictly sci-fi related (work that one out), this is simply amusing. President Bush collided with a local police officer and fell during a bike ride on the grounds of the Gleneagles…
