Avatar Sequel on the Way

Posted on January 15, 2010January 15, 2010 by Chris McQuillan

With Avatar biting at the heels of Titanic at the box office, James Cameron has admitted that he kept scenes in Avatar because they alluded to a sequel.

Star Sam Worthington is reportedly already signed up, but whether Cameron himself pushes through with a sequel is in no way set in stone just yet.

“I’ve had a storyline in mind from the start ““ there are even scenes in Avatar that I kept in because they lead to the sequel.”

“It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan [Slightly worrying term ““ Chris].  The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters ““ that all takes an enormous amount of time.  It’d be a waste not to use that again.

Whether or not it’s a good idea to make a sequel because it would be a shame not to, or because he wants more money, is another matter.  If there’s story left to tell ““ story that needs telling, then go for it.

Otherwise, no thanks.

No! It will be struck down by Sequelitis!
Anyone remember Bambi 2? Fox and the Hound 2? S. Darko? No? That’s because they should never have been made! I’m sure creating the image of the sinking Titanic took a lot of work too, that doesn’t mean they should have made Titanic 2: The Collosus…

Not that this comment is at all related, but the notion of ‘Titanic 2’ reminded me of this excelent trailer on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD4OnHCRd_4

On an avatar sequel however.. where would it go? I’m not sure I want to watch the humans return and slaughter MORE Na’vi and then be beaten back home again..

I am all for it. I left the theater with an intense NEED for more. Either do a sequel or make a show out of it, but give me SOMETHING.

I agree with Rob & Chris. Unless there’s a definite story to be told that isn’t just a rehash of the original, then they really shouldn’t bother with making a sequel, however good it would be for business.

Mind you, I think it’s pretty much inevitable whatever the story they decide to go with. It’s been a rollicking success, made a ton of cash and has everyone talking – it’s bound to be turned into a franchise.

What the hell is there to talk about in a sequel? Seriously? FernGully, the rainforest won, yay everybody. There’s not even a freaking Robin Williams lab bat to keep my attention.
