Avatar Reaches #2 on All-Time Box Office

Posted on January 8, 2010January 8, 2010 by Chris McQuillan

James Cameron’s Avatar has now overtaken The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and moved into second place on the list of all-time highest grossing films.

As of day 20, its overall haul stood at $1.135bn.  Still some way behind Titanic (also James Cameron’s) at $1.843bn, there is still some way left to go in Avatar’s run.  Could it topple the King of Film?

Unlikely.  But in a recession, this is a tremendous performance the sci-fi flick.  Who said good VFX didn’t get you anywhere?
