It may well shock you to realise that Daredevil was released 2003. Certainly does me; it feels like it can’t possibly have been 7 years since it was released.
As you can tell by the fact that there were no sequels and one wishy-washy spinoff (2005’s bland Elektra), it failed to set the superhero world alight. It’s not that it was a bad film per se, it just didn’t quite live up to expectations.
Now it seems Fox are starting again. 7 years on, and Daredevil looks set to be donning his crimson costume again – in a reboot. So don’t expect Ben Affleck to reprise his role.
Current internet rumblings are that a writer has been hired already: David Scarpa. To which you may well ask ‘Who?’. He has a sum total of two films under his belt: the Robert Redford/James Gandolfini military prison movie The Last Castle and … er … the 2008 remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Oh dear.
It’s early days yet, but what are your expectations? Do you think this is a good move?
I am hoping the rebootage is going to help out this movie franchise a little bit. It is smart of Fox to milk the Daredevil rights to the bone before Disney/Marvel can snatch them back again. My only hope is that they find an amazing Matt Murdock… it’s really quite necessary if they want the new Daredevil to be a success.
Agreed, it’ll hinge on the director/actor combo. I’m not exactly enthused by the choice of writer (I HATED the Day the Earth Stood Still remake), so in order to regain my interest they’re going to need to pull a GREAT combo out.
It’d be a shame if this flops/fizzles out, Daredevil’s an interesting character when handled well.
