Well this is certainly an interesting development.
Hollywood Reporter today report that US TV network Fox are to develop an American version of the hit Doctor Who spinoff-show Torchwood.
Before you fall to your knees and start bemoaning the remake-culture in which we live, though, you might be interested to learn that Torchwood creator/writer Russell T. Davies and executive producer Julie Gardner will be on board, joined by Jane Tranter whose previous production credits include the excellent Jekyll and Rome.
If that hasn’t stopped you reaching for the Retcon to wipe your memory of this news, consider this. Torchwood, while generally excellent, is very … very … er … well, it’s very Welsh. There’s obviously nothing wrong with that at all! What I mean to say is that it’s very localised and rather limited in terms of where its stories are set, but the US show will presumably have a large enough budget to take its storylines global. The implications of this could be quite interesting, well worth keeping an eye out for.
On the other hand, it could go the way of Life on Mars and Red Dwarf … watch this space!
This is a believe it when I see it scenario for me. RTD wants into America. RTD is also a proud, unrelenting liar who knows how to get attention. To me, this stinks of another “American Doctor Who movie” type thing.
