It’s no secret that Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman have been linked with the roles of the Riddler and The Penguin respectively since, well, basically the moment The Dark Knight was released.
These rumours are about to go into over-drive.
Michael Caine, who plays Alfred, has become the first person officially connected with the Batman franchise to add some substance to these undying claims.
Seemingly Caine said the following to MTV’s Splash Page“¦
“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, “˜Are we going to make [a sequel to The Dark Knight]?’ They said yeah. I said, “˜How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says “˜I’ll tell you how you top Heath “” Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, “˜Shit, they’ve done it again!'” [Laughs]
Some fans feel however, since screenwriter David Goyer has stated that lesser known villains would be used in the next movie, and also Christopher Nolan’s like for using lesser known actors in antagonistic roles, that Caine simply has heard the rumours and is stirring up a little fuss.
