REVIEW: Firefly, The Complete Series

Posted on April 13, 2004August 13, 2005 by Chris McQuillan

While watching the Firefly DVDs, a number of words kept leaping to my mind. Words like, “Amazing”, “Wonderful”, “Witty”, “Original” and “Interesting”. There are so many other positive words that could be used to describe this series.

The cancellation of Firefly was, in my opinion, a terrible mistake. And really, it was the network’s fault, not the show’s. Any show that is aired out of order on the Friday night “death-slot” is almost certainly doomed to failure. It is a huge shame this show ended prematurely, it had so much potential. The premise was interesting, the characters involving and the effects impressive. The final product was one that was extremely enjoyable to watch and even addictive.

In short, the series takes place five hundred years in the future, there is a whole new frontier, and the crew of the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity is eager to stake a claim on the action. They’ll take any job, legal or illegal, to keep fuel in the tanks and food on the table. But things get a bit more complicated after they take on a passenger wanted by the new totalitarian Alliance regime. Now they find themselves on the run, desperate to steer clear of Alliance ships and the flesh-eating Reavers who live on the fringes of space.

Joss Whedon has succeeded in creating all the essentials for a great show. A magnificent, interesting and compelling ensemble cast coupled with interesting stories and great acting.

The discs contain 14 episodes, 3 of which were never aired. When watching these great episodes, I felt an overwhelming feeling of sadness because I knew the show was already cancelled. I know that I will certainly be watching the upcoming film, “Serenity”. With any luck, the film will be a success and the series revived.

The episodes come in glorious quality and full anamorphic widescreen. There is a great selection of special features on disc 4.

I recommend these DVDs to everyone, they’re a magnificent purchase. They are released April 19th. Go buy!

Grade: A
